Gurugram’s nightlife is about to receive a significant boost as bars and restaurants will now be allowed to remain open 24×7, according to a recent order by the Haryana government. This decision, unique to northern India, has been welcomed by several restaurants in the city, who are eager to serve patrons delicious food and refreshing drinks during late-night and early-morning hours. However, while excitement fills the air, the security issue remains a top concern for restaurateurs.
The Haryana Deputy Chief Minister, Dushyant Chautala, has granted permission for restaurants across the state to operate round-the-clock, making Haryana stand out in the region. This development has been well-received by the IT hub’s culinary establishments, as they anticipate serving regular customers and those who work in corporate offices with international shifts. By offering dining options late at night, people can now enjoy a sit-down meal rather than relying on packaged food or online delivery from cloud kitchens.
The decision to allow 24×7 operations has several positive implications. It caters to residents’ midnight cravings, provides a comfortable space and wholesome meals for graveyard shift workers, boosts the city’s nighttime economy, and creates employment opportunities. Priykant Gautam, director of Simpatico Hospitality Pvt Ltd, believes that this move is a win-win for both customers and restaurant owners, as it enhances convenience and social interactions while contributing to a vibrant nightlife culture.
To operate round-the-clock, eateries must register with the Labour Department and comply with the terms and conditions of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958. While extending operating hours may lead to increased costs such as hiring more staff, improving infrastructure, and implementing security measures, most restaurant owners are optimistic about the potential business growth. They are willing to make the necessary adjustments and eagerly embrace the opportunity to provide round-the-clock service.
Despite the excitement, concerns regarding security have also been raised. Restaurant owners suggest measures such as regular patrols and increased visibility of law enforcement personnel to ensure the safety of customers and staff. Brajesh Arya, Chief Strategy Officer at Gola Sizzlers, emphasizes the need to address security concerns promptly before considering any further expansion or relaxation of dining hours. Building a robust support system that instills confidence and ensures the safety of individuals venturing out during late hours is crucial.
In the case of Gola Sizzlers, a growing chain of specialty dining restaurants in Delhi-NCR, they are observing the evolving circumstances before making a decision. They primarily cater to families and are uncertain if late-night dining would be preferred by their customer base. Therefore, they will closely monitor the situation before committing to extended operating hours.
It’s worth noting that in December of the previous year, the Delhi government permitted 24-hour operations for restaurants and bars in five- and four-star hotels. Now, with Gurugram joining the league of cities with round-the-clock dining options, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a more vibrant and accessible nightlife experience.
