How did you navigate the complexities of transitioning from a small-scale operation to a company with a significant presence in the domestic markets of Punjab, Haryana, and neighbouring regions?
A strategic focus on updating our facilities and broadening our market reach helped us navigate the transition. Commencing with a modest local presence, we focused on improving our production methods to conform to industry norms. This meant giving ample briefings to our staff and purchasing new equipment. Additionally, we developed trusting bonds with regional vendors and clients, which aided us in comprehending and meeting the particular requirements of the marketplaces in Punjab, Haryana, and the surrounding areas. Our notable presence was established mainly because of this modernisation and market knowledge combo, a powerful combination that has instilled confidence in our stakeholders.
Please explain your views on Modernization and Quality Control
Modernisation has been a cornerstone of our journey. In 1998, we transformed our operations with a fully automated plant and introduced our first Sortex machine from Satake, Japan. This strategic modernisation initiative was not a hasty decision but a result of meticulous planning to align our production methodologies with the latest industry standards and trends while enhancing yield without compromising the exceptional quality of our basmati rice. Expanding the facilities further in 2001 and embracing clean energy for power generation showcased our dedication to sustainability and quality. Overcoming the initial hurdles of aligning our old mill plant with modern standards was seamless due to our clear vision and the right technology.
What were the most significant hurdles in aligning the old mill plant with current industry standards, and how did you overcome them?
The team encountered no significant hurdles in our journey thanks to our clear vision of becoming a significant player in the international market. Recognising the need for a significant investment in new equipment and technology, we also understood the importance of involving our staff in this process. We needed their help to effectively use the latest machinery. To overcome these obstacles, we have developed a comprehensive modernisation plan that includes gradual upgrades to prevent interfering with continuing operations. We have also instituted a strict quality control procedure to guarantee that our products continuously fulfil the highest requirements.
How do you ensure the maintenance of high-quality production while enhancing production efficiency?
Our commitment to quality is driven by our dedication to client satisfaction. We maintain high-quality output by implementing cutting-edge quality control procedures at every stage of the production process. This includes sourcing the finest raw materials, leveraging advanced milling technology, and conducting rigorous testing and inspections. Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) rigorously and leveraging our family’s expertise in paddy procurement have been instrumental. Our dedication has been recognised with a comprehensive array of international quality certifications. These efforts have culminated in the establishment of a robust export network, reaching nearly 30 countries.
Please explain your international presence and domestic expansion
We now have a strong export network that reaches around 30 nations. Through unwavering dedication and unrelenting effort, we have established the groundwork for success, concluding in the remarkable achievement of reaching a turnover of almost US $100 million. Preparing to enter new domestic and international markets, we aim to grow our basmati rice company to a significant $200 million annual revenue by 2030.
What motivated the decision to expand into international markets, and what were the initial logistical challenges you faced?
As the market grew in the 90s and early 2000s, expanding into international markets was a strategic decision made by the team. Following initial challenges, including the loss of a shipment due to heavy rains, we gleaned valuable insights. We proactively engaged with top-tier logistics companies to fortify the reliability and resilience of our export supply chain. Moreover, establishing an office in Dubai and active participation in global food and agro exhibitions significantly bolstered our international presence. The local ecosystem of Amritsar also proved pivotal in guiding us through the intricacies of export market regulations. With unwavering industry support and our steadfast commitment to quality and reliability, we effectively navigated through our initial hurdles and flourished in the global market.
Can you describe the strategic steps you took to establish DRRK Foods as a globally recognized brand despite setbacks like losing an export shipment to adverse weather conditions?
Despite the occasional setback, such as the loss of an export shipment, we used these experiences as learning opportunities, strengthening our resilience. We also took the initiative to build a strong network of reliable distributors and partners, ensuring seamless operations. Our regular participation in international trade shows and continuous client communication have played a significant role in establishing and maintaining our reputation. One of the strategic steps was having one of the promoters based out of Dubai and setting up an office there. This allowed us to participate in all the renowned Food and Agro exhibitions globally.
How did you build and maintain a robust export network spanning 30 countries?
Finding reliable distributors and agents in each target nation was necessary to create and sustain a strong export network. We carefully studied the market to identify the distinct needs of every area and then customised our goods and services to meet those needs. Extensive market visits and presence at international trade shows enabled us to establish trusting bonds and keep abreast of industry developments. We could sustain a dependable and wide-ranging export network encompassing 30 nations through a regular delivery of superior products and exceptional customer service.

What were the key factors that contributed to reaching a turnover exceeding US $100 million?
The main contributing elements were strategic market expansion, an unwavering focus on quality, and effective production methods. Due to our steadfast dedication to quality, we have earned the trust and respect of both domestic and international customers, which encourages recommendations and repeat business. Our client base and revenue streams grew due to our foreign market expansion. Thanks to improvements in modernising our facilities and streamlining our production procedures, we could also satisfy rising demand without sacrificing quality.
