As the President of the association, what is your main objective or vision for the hospitality industry in Udaipur?
It all started as a Fun. We used to have a small group of 6 which used to meet over parties. Our most active Secretary Mr. Rupam Sarkar shared the idea of making an association to do more towards our industry and we formed United Hoteliers of Udaipur got it registered and added some more like-minded GMs. We stood for various causes the industry was facing like Bar Licence Fee hikes, Cleaning of Lakes, plantations etc. Since its inception, UHU has been very instrumental in making Udaipur as most desirable Tourist Destination. Additionally, We gave representation to the Principal Secretary for various facilities to be given to hoteliers which were included in the new Tourism Policy.
What role does the United Hoteliers of Udaipur play in supporting local hoteliers and the broader hospitality sector in the region?
Since its inception, UHU has been very instrumental in making Udaipur as most desirable Tourist Destination. In Covid, all members appealed to Udaipur being a safe city to visit. We distributed masks. educated tourists and locals. During COVID-19 some employees died and were only earning members of their families. UHU formed a committee to select 3 such members and we did a master chef, and home chef competition to raise funds We selected 3 such employees who died in COVID-19 as the only earning members of their family and gave each family 1Lakh Rs. The event was done with Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi ( Namak Shamak ) as Chief Guest.
How has the association evolved over the years, and what are some of the key milestones in its journey?
The United Hoteliers of Udaipur has evolved significantly over the years, growing from a small, informal group of hotel owners into a well-established and influential association that plays a pivotal role in shaping Udaipur’s hospitality landscape. Initially formed to address the common challenges faced by local hoteliers, the association has expanded its influence, helping to set industry standards, foster collaboration, and advocate for the interests of Udaipur’s tourism sector.
How do you see the role of sustainability and eco-friendly practices evolving within the hospitality industry in Udaipur?
On World Environment Day we cleaned lakes, distributed and did a plantation with the Pollution Control Board. Organised A Run on Fatehsagar. On World Tourism Day we organized an event by honouring people working in different parts of our Industry supporting Tourism. We made A Commtt. and selected 3 in each category -Oldest Hotels, Guides, Travel Agents, Handicrafts, Miniature Artists, Railway Colie, Airport Porter etc.
Looking ahead, what are some of the key changes or innovations you would like to see in Udaipur’s hospitality sector over the next 5–10 years?
The new state government is very aggressive in promoting Rajasthan. After a long time, we have seen the Tourism Department participating in all trade fairs. The change from top to bottom is now in full swing. New Policy is Doing Ease of Business so the Industry is also working hard in providing hospitality with the flair of Traditions marching along with the Government towards a common goal. We need good signage in the city so that tourists can be guided in the right direction. Hotels must display a scanner from which tourists can get all the city’s information.
What are your thoughts on the rise of digital transformation in the hospitality industry, including online bookings, digital marketing, and the use of technology to enhance guest experiences?
Digitalisation is good but there is a big challenge as far as online bookings are concerned. Tourists are being cheated by this method as there is no certification of authenticity or even in some cases they pay but the place never exists upon reaching.
How do you maintain a balance between tradition and modernity in Udaipur’s hospitality industry, given its rich cultural heritage and contemporary tourism trends?
As the President of the United Hoteliers of Udaipur, I believe in blending the city’s rich cultural heritage with modern tourism needs to offer an authentic yet contemporary experience. We focus on preserving Udaipur’s traditional architecture, cuisine, and cultural practices while integrating modern amenities and sustainable practices to meet global expectations. Our hotels combine traditional Rajasthani design with cutting-edge technology, providing guests with both luxury and comfort. We also actively collaborate with local artisans and the community to showcase the city’s vibrant heritage. This balance ensures Udaipur remains a timeless destination that appeals to both traditional and modern travellers.
