In a major leadership transition, Deepinder Goyal, the founder and CEO of Zomato (rebranded as Eternal), has announced he will step down after 18 years at the helm. Taking his place as the Group CEO is Albinder Dhindsa, the current head of Zomato’s quick-commerce arm, Blinkit.
A Shift Toward Quick-Commerce Dominance
The appointment of Dhindsa signals Eternal’s strategic pivot toward the $11.5 billion instant delivery market, where Blinkit has recently become the company’s largest revenue driver.
- New Leadership: Albinder Dhindsa, who founded Blinkit in 2014 and led its successful integration into Zomato in 2022, will now oversee the entire group.
- Goyal’s New Role: Deepinder Goyal will remain with the company as Vice Chairman. He plans to focus on “exploration and experimentation,” including his research ventures in human longevity and aerospace technology.
- Strategic Vision: In a letter to shareholders, Goyal stated that the demands of a public company CEO require “singular focus,” which he now wishes to direct toward his other global-scale interests, including Continue Research and LAT Aerospace.
Market Impact and Performance
Eternal (Zomato) reported a 73% jump in quarterly profit, with Blinkit achieving a positive adjusted core earnings of ₹40 million—a significant turnaround from a loss of ₹1.56 billion in the previous quarter. Analysts view the elevation of the Blinkit chief as a clear indication that quick commerce is the “rainmaker” and the future of the company’s business model.
