Taj Wellington Mews Chennai Achieves South Asia’s First EDGE Zero Carbon Certification

-KH News Desk (editorial1@imaws.org)

The Taj Wellington Mews Chennai, a luxury service residence uniquely managed entirely by women, has made a landmark achievement by being awarded the prestigious EDGE Zero Carbon Certification. This makes it the first hotel in South Asia to receive this global benchmark for sustainable buildings under the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) program, developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC)—a member of the World Bank Group.

The Significance of EDGE Zero Carbon

The EDGE certification, issued by authorized certifier Sintali, is a globally recognized green building framework that adheres to stringent international sustainability standards (including GRESB, ICMA, CBI, and CDP). To qualify for the top-tier EDGE Zero Carbon rating, the property first had to achieve an EDGE Advanced rating. This entailed demonstrating significant resource efficiency benchmarks:

  • Over 40% savings in energy.
  • Over 20% savings in water.
  • Over 20% savings in materials.

Crucially, the hotel earned the final Zero Carbon recognition by demonstrating net-zero on-site carbon emissions, reflecting a comprehensive approach to energy-efficient design, construction, and operation. This commitment highlights the hotel’s dedication to responsible operations and environmental stewardship, aligning with the Indian Hotels Company Limited’s (IHCL) comprehensive ESG+ framework, Paathya.

Leadership in Sustainable Hospitality

Mandeep Kaur, General Manager, Taj Wellington Mews Chennai, celebrated the achievement, noting that the recognition underscores the hotel’s commitment to “sustainable luxury and responsible hospitality.” This achievement sets a powerful precedent for the Indian hospitality sector, demonstrating that high-end service can be delivered while meeting the highest global standards for environmental responsibility and inspiring others to further their commitment to the planet.
