Due to levels of ethylene oxide found in the pesticide that is not safe for human consumption, the Singapore Food Authority (SFA) has ordered the recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala on Thursday.
“As the implicated products were imported into Singapore, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has directed the importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., to recall the products. The recall is ongoing,” the statement read. It added: “Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not authorized for use in food. It can be used to fumigate agricultural products to prevent microbial contamination. Under Singapore’s Food Regulations, ethylene oxide is allowed to be used in the sterilization of spices.”
The agency further stated that while eating food tainted with low concentrations of ethylene oxide poses no immediate harm, prolonged exposure to the same may have negative health effects.
“Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimized as much as possible.” The agency further advised users to avoid consumption of the “implicated products”. “Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiry.”
