The HORECA industry thrives on creating vibrant experiences, but there’s a hidden battle behind the scenes: a struggle to find enough staff. Restaurants close early, hotels operate with limited services, and cafes face long wait times – all because there simply aren’t enough hands on deck. KitchenHerald, had recently conducted a HoReCa meet in Ahmedabad.
Key challenge:
While most participants felt that labor shortage is a key issue, it is not just that only issue. “This labor shortage isn’t new. Long hours, demanding customers and unpredictable schedules make HORECA jobs less than ideal for some. Wages haven’t kept pace with the cost of living, and limited benefits make it hard to attract and retain skilled workers. The result? A revolving door of staff and constant pressure on businesses to deliver exceptional service with a depleted workforce.”, a participant said.
The consequences ripple outwards. Reduced service means longer waits, smaller portions, and declining customer satisfaction. Businesses need help to maintain quality while facing rising costs. Ultimately, everyone loses – stressed employees, frustrated customers, and businesses fighting to stay afloat.
Technology can come for rescue:
So, what’s the solution? Technology can be a powerful teammate and not a replacement for the human touch. “ Imagine a world where customers can order and pay directly at their table through a convenient tablet. This frees up servers to focus on building rapport, attending to special requests, and ensuring a memorable dining experience.”, said a participant who owns a cafe in the area. Another participant felt that smart inventory management systems can track supplies, predict demand, and place automatic orders, reducing waste and ensuring kitchens always have what they need. Self-service kiosks can handle routine tasks, allowing servers to focus on complex orders and personalized service.
The kitchen itself can become a haven of efficiency. Smart ovens pre-program cooking times for perfect results, while automated dishwashers handle the dirty work hygienically and quickly. These are just a few examples, and as technology evolves, we can expect even more innovative solutions that streamline operations, reduce workload, and free up staff to focus on the human connection that sets HORECA businesses apart.
But the benefits extend beyond efficiency. Technology can transform HORECA jobs into exciting careers. With machines handling repetitive tasks, staff can engage in problem-solving, creativity, and delivering exceptional customer experiences. This reduces stress, improves employee satisfaction, and makes HORECA careers more attractive to younger generations who value innovation and a dynamic work environment.
Of course, technology comes with challenges. Implementing new systems requires upfront investment, especially for smaller businesses. Training staff and providing ongoing support are crucial. While automation offers benefits, the human touch is irreplaceable. Personalized service, genuine warmth, and the ability to connect with guests on a deeper level will always differentiate a good experience from a great one.
Solutions:
The labor shortage in the HORECA industry is a real challenge, but it’s not insurmountable. By embracing technology as a powerful tool, not a replacement for human connection, we can create a future where HORECA businesses thrive, staff feel valued and engaged, and customers enjoy exceptional experiences. Technology is here to empower us, not replace us, and together, we can write a new chapter for the HORECA industry – one filled with innovation, efficiency, and, most importantly, the warmth of human connection.
