The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) in Chennai, a renowned institution in the field of hospitality education, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a series of grand events to commemorate its Diamond Jubilee. Established in 1963, IHM Chennai has grown over the years to become a prominent institute for hospitality education not only in India but also on the global stage.
From its humble beginnings with a single building in Taramani and a mere 60 students, IHM Chennai has expanded its reach to accommodate nearly 1000 students from all corners of the country. Initially known as the Madras Catering College, the institution earned its moniker “MadCats,” affectionately used by its alumni.
The IHM Chennai Alumni Association, a collective of the institute’s accomplished graduates, has been instrumental in organizing these celebratory events, intending to inspire the next generation of hospitality professionals. Notably, IHM Chennai alumni have achieved prominent positions in the hospitality industry worldwide, including CEOs, COOs, Vice Presidents, Executive Chefs, and General Managers.
Mr. Malepati Chakravarthy, an alumnus from the class of 1977 and current President of the IHMCAA, expressed his pride in the achievements of the alumni. He stated, “Our alumni are not only excelling in senior roles within the global hospitality industry but also upholding the reputation of our institute.”
Mr. S. Bipin Kumar, a 1988 graduate and Secretary of the Alumni Association, highlighted the international acclaim that some “MadCats” have garnered, with accolades such as Michelin stars and prestigious hotelier awards.
Mrs. Parimala. R, the current Principal in charge of IHM Chennai and a 1993 graduate shared her feelings of nostalgia and pride as an alumna and administrator. She emphasized the collaborative efforts of the Alumni Association and the institute to organize a commemorative celebration befitting the institute’s legacy.
The celebratory events at the IHM Chennai campus include the inauguration of an additional Girl’s Hostel, constructed with a grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Dr.B. Manivasan, Principal Secretary of Tourism, Culture & Religious Endowments, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. The IHMCAA and dignitaries from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and National Council for Hotel Management will release an official souvenir magazine, donate equipment, and honor distinguished individuals. The festivities will culminate in a gala dinner attended by over 400 alumni, hosted by the Alumni Association.
As IHM Chennai reaches this significant milestone, its legacy in shaping the hospitality industry and nurturing future leaders is evident through the achievements of its alumni and the celebrations that honor its six decades of excellence.
