Going forward, the brand plans to expand its distribution network pan India and grow its presence in the international markets with the south Indian population.
Sivaraj Devarajan, Founder, Gharuda Foods says, “We are passionate about our local food culture from Thanjavur and want to take it to the world. We come from the Thanjavur district which is famously known as the “Granary of South India,” since the rule of the Chola dynasty. The region has its own traditions of making food as well as cultivating it. Following the same, Gharuda Foods specialise in making south Indian food, thus we are keen to tap the foreign markets where more south Indian people are living. Internationally, Gharuda Foods is working with clients in Singapore and Malaysia. New markets like Mauritius, Australia, the UK, UAE and the Gulf countries are also on our radar. Commencing on a small scale, the company is also ensuring its presence in the USA and Canada.”
On the domestic front, Gharuda Foods recently participated at the AAHAR International Food and Hospitality Fair 2022. Post exhibiting its products at the B2B expo, the company has its hands full with an overwhelming number of business queries. “This was our first time at the AAHAR exhibition and we are pleasantly surprised by the number of queries that have come in. We are now working on closing each business lead and simultaneously identifying distributors in other regions of India, especially North. The company is also planning to open its new franchise in Bengaluru by the end of this year,” he added.
Gharuda Foods is also planning to foray into the HORECA sector. Devarajan elaborates, “We are a new company with just half a decade into the business so we are taking one step at a time. Currently, the brand is supplying to retailers and aims to expand its distributorship to pan India. The company currently has dealers in and around Chennai and some parts of South India. Once distribution network falls in place, it will automatically pave way for increasing business with general trade as well as HORECA.”
The company offers different varieties of ready to cook and ready to eat instant food items. All the products are prepared in a traditional way and no preservatives, colours or chemicals are used. They follow the ancient traditional methods of cooking and storing the food like how grandmothers used to work. The shelf life of Gharuda’s products is six months as they don’t use any preservatives to make them stay longer. But the products can last up to one year also but to be on the safer side, we provide only six months guarantee, assures Devarajan.
Gharuda’s bestselling product in the international market is the Biryani Masala. They are promoting three types of biryani – one is authentic Mahal Biryani which is widely available in Chennai and is loved by people from down South to up north of India. The second Biryani offering is the Ambur. All the Arcot Nawabs came to the Ambur region making it the hub of biryani. Next is Chettinad Biryani. Chettinad people travelled the world to do business. So when they came back, they brought in so many flavours from the rest of the world from Southeast Asian countries. Cooking local flavours with the ones brought in by traders, Chettinad Biryani was introduced.
