Constellation Brands is a US-based company leading producer and seller of beer, wine, and spirits. They are the largest beer importer in the US in terms of sales and hold the third-highest market share of 7.4 percent among all significant beer suppliers. The company’s portfolio includes more than 100 brands. Robert Mondavi, Kim Crawford, Meiomi, Simi Winery, Ruffino, and The Prisoner Wine Company are among the wine labels. The beer portfolio of Constellation comprises domestic craft brewer Funky Buddha as well as international brands including Corona, Modelo Especial, Negra Modelo, and Pacifico with US distribution rights. Svedka Vodka, Casa Noble Tequila, High West Whisky, and Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whisky are some of its spirit brands.
In order to strengthen the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments, Constellation Brands announces two new stewardship targets: to attain TRUE Zero Waste to Landfill Certification and to improve circular packaging. The primary focus is on attaining TRUE Zero Waste to Landfill Certification by further reducing operational waste across its facilities and enhancing diversion from landfills by the fiscal year 2025. The first zero waste certification program, TRUE Zero Waste to Landfill Certification, encourages the adoption of sustainable materials management and reduction practices that improve environmental, health, and economic outcomes in order to measure, improve, and recognise zero waste performance.
“Constellation has a long-standing commitment to operating in a manner that safeguards
our environment and natural resources and our team is laser-focused on continuing to build
on this commitment through a disciplined approach and by executing targeted initiatives that are both good for our business and key stakeholders and good for the world,”
said Mike McGrew, Constellation Brands’ Executive Vice President and Chief Communications, CSR, and Diversity Officer.
By the end of the fiscal year 2025, Constellation hopes to have greatly improved circular packaging across its portfolio of alcoholic beverages. To achieve this objective, it will implement specific initiatives to:
- Reduce its Wine & Spirits portfolio’s ratio of packaging weight to product weight by 10%.
- Ensure that 80% of the portfolio’s wine and spirits packaging is recyclable or renewable.
- For all appropriate 4-pack and 6-pack SKUs within its Beer range, replace high-cone plastic rings with recyclable paperboard.
“Our introduction of new waste reduction and circular packaging targets is yet another
example of this commitment. We look forward to continuing to work to make a positive difference in local communities where we live and work.”
said Mike McGrew, Constellation Brands’ Executive Vice President and Chief Communications, CSR, and Diversity Officer.
The following priority areas serve as the foundation for Constellation’s larger ESG aspirations, which include these new commitments and targets:
- Serving as good stewards of the environment and natural resources by reducing operational waste and promoting the use of returnable, recyclable, or renewable packaging; setting an example for the beverage alcohol industry in terms of water stewardship; lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy conservation and renewable energy initiatives.
- Elevating social equity within the industry and communities through enhancing economic development and prosperity in underprivileged communities; promoting an inclusive culture characterized by the diversity of background and thought, which reflects the customers and communities where we live and work; and championing the professional growth and advancement of women in the industry and communities.
- Encouraging individuals to consume alcohol responsibly by supporting fact-based education, engagement programs, and policies. This is done by ensuring that the company’s products are responsibly promoted and marketed.
The Constellation Brands’ team is “laser-focused on continuing to build on this commitment through a disciplined approach and by executing targeted initiatives that are both good for our business and key stakeholders and good for the world,” said Mike McGrew.
The news statement from Constellation leadership stated that the additional pledges are in line with the business’s current sustainability goals. They assert that the company’s 2022 ESG impact report demonstrates that it has improved its stewardship in recent years, particularly through energy conservation for a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
